Heating is the largest energy expense in most homes, accounting for 35-50% of annual energy bills in New Jersey. Reducing your heating energy use with a high-efficiency system is the single most effective way to save money and reduce your home's contribution to global environmental problems.

• Install High-Efficiency Heating and Start Saving Now.

With advanced technology, new furnaces and boilers use as much as 97% of fuel input, compared with 50 to 70% for older models. Factors to consider for high efficiency.

When to Consider a New Higher Efficiency Heating System.

If your furnace or boiler is older than 20 years, chances are it is a good investment to replace it with a high-efficiency model with the guidance of a reputable contractor. Also consider a replacement now if your system is one of the following:

arro  Old coal burner that was previously switched over to oil or gas

arro  Old gas furnace without electronic ignition. If it has a pilot light, it was probably installed prior to 1992 and has an efficiency of about 65% efficient (the least efficient systems today are 80%)

arro  Old gas furnace without vent dampers or an induced draft fan (which limit the flow of heated air up the chimney when the heating system is off).

If your system is 10 to 20 years old, it may just need service and repair, and you may want to make other energy efficiency improvements to your home. Air Temp Service Co, Inc. can help you evaluate your existing heating system. Often it will be more cost-effective to improve house insulation and air-tightness, repair or insulate ductwork, or tune up your system.

Seven Factors for Achieving High Efficiency Heating Systems

1) Efficiency rating is the most important consideration since a high-efficiency heating system can make a dramatic impact on lowering home heating bills, especially if you own an older system. More complete energy use also reduces pollution. Look for an Energy Star® ratings of 90 percent or higher.

2) Humidifiers are especially important for forced-air systems which produce dry heat. Adding humidity to the air changes the apparent temperature, making it feel warmer than the actual room temperature. So adding humidity can also help you save on fuel costs. We include a FREE Aprilaire humidifier with every new furnace installation.

 • The Aprilaire humidifier automatically adds moisture to dry indoor air for a higher level of comfort in forced-air heating systems.

3) Zoned Heating lets the homeowner adjust the temperature in two or more areas of a home independently with separate thermostats, and even down to the room level with baseboard heating. Zoned heating can be a valuable feature especially for large or multi-level homes, where some areas may be unoccupied during parts of the day or extended periods.

4) Programmable Thermostats give the homeowner the ability to save even more on heating bills, by matching heating demand to the daily schedule of the household. Temperatures can be dialed back at night and when no one is home.

5) Damper Controls allow airflow in a forced air system to be directed through the ducts to "balance" temperature between areas of the home for proper seasonal circulation. In the winter, more warm air may be directed to a lower level, for example; (which would normally require more flow to keep warm.) When switching to the AC system in summer, a greater volume of cooler air can be directed to the upper level More sophisticated HVAC systems replace manual dampers with electronic damper controls.

6) Air Filtration systems can minimize dust and allergens, and can range from simple filters to HEPA filtration and separate electrostatic filtration systems. Those with asthma or other chronic upper respiratory problems will want to review these options with their HVAC / heating contractor. It should be noted that heavy filtration does impact air flow which can reduce blower efficiency.

7) Electronic Ignition gas furnaces are more efficient those that use pilot lights, so they are standard on most new furnaces and hot water heaters.

What's the difference between a furnace and a boiler?

To put it simply, a boiler heats water or other heat transfer fluid which circulates through baseboards, radiators or a radiant heating system to heat your home. A furnace heats air in a combustion chamber which circulates through heating ducts by means of a blower. The ducts are typically the same as for the central air conditioning system.

Furnaces and boilers may be either oil-fired or gas-fired, including propane or natural gas. A natural gas-fired heating system is generally less expensive to operate than one fired by heating oil. Gas also burns cleaner with little or no odor and fewer pollutants.

Hot Water Heaters

Heating water and keeping it hot requires far more therms (a unit of energy) than the same volume of air, so a high-efficiency hot water heater is essential to managing your home for peak energy efficiency. We install high-efficiency gas-fired hot water heaters with electronic ignition and heavily insulated 40- to 60-gallon water tanks. Extended warranties are available. If your hot water unit is nearing the end of its service life, don't wait for it to rust and cause a flood, replace it now.
